Adhesives & Additives

from Plasterers 1 Stop Shop

Adhesives are not limited to binding together paper or other light materials. There are industrial grade adhesives that can be used in construction. They can be used to fasten wood together. There are also additives that can be used to improve certain processes in construction.

In what sorts of projects will I need adhesives and additives?

Adhesives are used for a number of purposes. For one, they can be used to remove the need to pin under the work piece in order to prevent slumping. Adhesives are used to bind different kinds of materials. They can bind metal and concrete, for example, in the case of sliding window installation. Adhesives are also used in the installation of certain types of floor tiles as well as in sub floor preparation.

Additives, on the other hand, are added to other construction supplies to achieve certain results. A plaster accelerator, for instance, may be added to finishing plasters to speed up setting time and be able to complete tasks faster. Inversely, a plaster retarder may be used to slow down the setting time to buy more time for plastering especially when it comes to complex jobs.

What is the best type of PVA for the job?

PVA stands for polyvinyl acetate, a synthetic polymer commonly used in the production of wood glue and carpenter’s glue. It is used as adhesive for wallpaper installation. It can also be used as a primer for drywall and for other substrates.

It will be difficult to provide a single answer to the question what is the best type of PVA for a job. Different types of jobs have different requirements. However, it would be advisable to look for certain features such as water resistance, durability, longevity, and the ability to stick to virtually any surface. A quick drying PVA glue may also be preferable.

What are the commonly available of adhesives and additives used in construction?

Adhesives come in a variety of types or forms. They can be PVAs like the multipurpose quick-drying Febond PVA, heavy-duty solvented grab adhesive like the Pinkgrip adhesive, or styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) adhesives. These adhesives all have heavy-duty adhesion capabilities that make them good enough for construction purposes.

For the additives, some of the popular products available on the market are the plaster retarders and accelerators. Their names obviously indicate what they are supposed to do. There’s also the high-performance Blue Grit bonding agent from Febond, which is intended for enhancing the grip of various substrates. Moreover, PVA may also serve as an additive as it can be added to cement mortar to induce waterproofing properties. SBR may also be used as a water resistant bonding agent, which is great for strengthening or repairing concrete.
