Adhesive tapes are commonly used items in a wide range of settings. Not many may know that they are also used in construction. They are used mainly for the following tasks: air sealing, ensuring energy efficiency, and supporting structural durability.

What types of tapes are used in construction?

There are different types of tapes used in construction. Some of the most important ones are as follows:

Butyl adhesive tape - This adhesive tape is notable for its flexibility, durability, and good performance under high temperatures. It is usually used for flashing around windows, doors, and roofing. Examples of specific butyl adhesive tapes used in construction are the temporary down-pipe tape and the window protection tape.

Acrylic adhesive tape - This tape is used for air sealing in construction. Acrylic adhesive tapes are distinctive for having adhesiveness that gets stronger over time, high resistance against UV rays, and their no off-gassing property.

Duct tape - Of course, there’s also the popular duct tape. As the name implies, this adhesive tape is used on duct work. It is used for the sealing of ventilation and heating ducts. There’s a special type of duct tape, called the stucco tape, which is designed to stick to various kinds of textures and materials. Are there different types of tapes for different surfaces/purposes?

Just like in other settings, different surfaces and purposes require different types of tape. While there are multipurpose tapes available, they cannot be expected to effective enough when used in all kinds of surfaces and purposes. There are specific tapes created for specific kinds of surfaces.

The water-resistant butyl tape is good for roofing, vents, pipes, and glass. Acrylic tape, on the other hand, is good for air sealing purposes but there’s a version of it (acrylic foam tape) that can be used to bond two materials with uneven surfaces. Brick tapes that are available in the market could be acrylic tape designed for rough surfaces. Duct tape, despite its name, is actually versatile and can be used for purposes other than duct work.

What sizes are tapes available in?

Tapes used in the construction industry are usually broader and more adhesive. Many of them are around 1 to 2 inches in width but they can be as wide as 500 millimetres (especially for window protection tapes). The extra width is not a problem as it’s easier to just trim the unneeded dimension, than to use a narrow tape.

The tape used for temporary down-piping is usually 150 millimetres wide. Duct tapes are usually around 50 to 75 millimetres in width. Window protection tapes, on the other hand, are in the 300 to 500 millimetre range in terms of width. Most rolls of these tapes are typically 50 to 100 meters long.
